SN-HS22 2D QR Barcode Scanner

Retail hardware specified for the work it actually does.

A handheld that goes back into its gooseneck stand when the queue starts moving. ±70° skew and pitch tolerance means the operator never squares a label up to the window, and a red aiming LED shows where the reader is pointing before the trigger is pulled.

The SN-HS22 ships with a gooseneck stand. That single accessory changes what the product is: clipped in, it behaves as a presentation reader that reads whatever is passed under it; lifted out, it is a handheld for the shelf, the stockroom and the pallet. Most counters end up needing both, and buying one device that does both is cheaper than buying two.

The engine is a 640 × 480 CMOS sensor with a white LED illuminator and a separate red aiming LED. The aimer matters more than it sounds: on a dark shelf or inside a cardboard box, the operator needs to know where the window is pointing before pressing the trigger. A reader without one reads blind and gets re-aimed by trial.

The angle tolerances are the strongest in this range — ±70° of skew and ±70° of pitch, with full 360° roll. In practice that means a code held at a steep angle to the window still decodes, which is what a handheld is for: the operator is not going to square the label up to the reader, so the reader has to tolerate the operator.

Core specifications

Imager CMOS, 640 × 480 pixels
Illumination White LED
Aiming Red LED
Field of view 52.1° diagonal, 43.1° horizontal
Scan angle Skew ±70°, pitch ±70°, roll 360°
Minimum resolution ≥ 5 mil
Print contrast ≥ 20%

Decode range by symbology

EAN-13, 13 mil 35–190 mm (label 17 × 31 mm)
PDF417, 6 mil 20–70 mm (label 14 × 7 mm)
Code 39, 4.7 mil 25–60 mm (label 6 × 21 mm)
Data Matrix, 10 mil 20–75 mm (label 5 × 5 mm)
QR Code, 15 mil 20–90 mm (label 10 × 10 mm)

Read the table by column, not by headline. The 190 mm figure applies to a full-size retail label; a small Data Matrix tops out at 75 mm. This is normal for a fixed-focus imager and it is the reason a handheld is not a substitute for a long-range scanner on a warehouse rack.

Symbologies

1D: Codabar, Code 39, Code 32, Interleaved 2 of 5, Industrial 2 of 5, Matrix 2 of 5, Code 93, Code 11, Code 128, UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8, EAN-13, MSI, ISSN, ISBN, GS1 DataBar.

2D: PDF417, Micro PDF417, QR Code, Micro QR, Aztec, Data Matrix.

Code 11 and MSI/Plessey are worth noting if you sell into telecoms or into older library systems — both are legacy symbologies that general-purpose 2D readers often drop, and both are present here.

Physical and power

Dimensions 165 × 70 × 90 mm (W × D × H, maximum)
Input voltage 5 VDC ±5%
Power consumption 950 mW typical
Operating current 190 mA RMS typical, 220 mA maximum
Standby current 70 mA
Sleep current 17 mA
Interface USB or RS-232
In the box USB cable; RS-232 cable and power supply on the serial variant

The 17 mA sleep state is the number that matters on a battery-backed terminal. A reader left idle on a USB port draws almost nothing until the button is pressed, so it does not quietly drain a mobile power bank between customers.

Environment

Operating −10 °C to +60 °C, storage −40 °C to +70 °C, 5–95% relative humidity non-condensing, ambient light 0–100,000 lux.

Note that the operating range starts at −10 °C rather than −20 °C. That is the correct figure for this model and it matters for an unheated stockroom in a cold climate: below −10 °C the unit should be allowed to warm up before use rather than being expected to work from a cold start.

Two modes, one device

In the stand. The gooseneck holds an angle without tools and can be bent to point at the counter or at the customer. In this position the reader is typically configured for presentation mode, and the operator passes items under it. The stand also keeps the unit where it can be found.

In the hand. Trigger-activated. The red aimer projects a visible point, and the ±70° tolerances mean the code does not have to be square to the window. This is the mode used for shelf checks, stock counts and anything that cannot be lifted to the till.

Where it fits

  • Small retail and convenience stores. One device covers the till and the shelf check.
  • Pharmacy back counters. Reads the box at the till and the batch code on the stock behind it.
  • Clinics and small warehouses. Trigger mode for counting, stand mode for check-out.
  • Multi-lane installs. The stand is interchangeable, so a damaged mount is a part swap rather than a new reader.

Limits

Wired only — there is no battery and no Bluetooth variant. Decode range tops out at 190 mm on a retail label, so it is not a long-range device. And at ≥ 5 mil the resolution floor is slightly higher than the 4 mil readers in this range; if the application involves very small elements, that is the model to choose instead.

Compliance and ordering

SKU SN-HS22. Specify USB or RS-232 at order; the serial variant ships with its own cable and power supply. Gooseneck stand included. MOQ 1, 10–15 days on standard configuration, OEM branding available from 50 units.

640 × 480 CMOS · ≥ 5 mil · 52.1° field of view

±70° skew and ±70° pitch — the operator never has to square up the label

Skew and pitch both tolerate ±70°, so a label presented at an angle still decodes — the operator stops rotating the item to face the window, a second per scan that a queue is made of. The engine is 640 × 480 CMOS with a 5 mil floor and a 52.1° field of view, and a white illuminator handles LCD and OLED screens at normal brightness. Working temperature starts at −10 °C, the specified limit of this imaging engine: treat it as the working floor rather than a survival figure.

Gooseneck stand included: presentation reader and handheld in one unit

The gooseneck is a friction cradle rather than a lock, so the unit lifts out and drops back without a release — presentation mode in the stand, trigger mode in the hand. It holds its shape under the reader's own weight; it drifts if it is repeatedly bent or if the unit is pulled out at an angle instead of lifted, which is why the cradle is open at the front. The stand ships with the unit, so there is no separate mount to specify.

17 mA sleep · 190 mA RMS · 220 mA max

Red aiming LED and a 17 mA sleep state that does not drain a power bank

A red aiming LED marks the scan line, so the operator knows where to present the code before triggering instead of hunting for it after a failed read. The sleep state draws 17 mA, against 70 mA standby and 190 mA RMS operating, 220 mA at peak — that is what makes the unit usable from a power bank across a shift. Typical consumption is 950 mW at 5 V, and ambient tolerance is 100,000 lux.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common inquiries from retailers, system integrators, and procurement teams.

Can I use it while it is sitting in the stand?

Yes. The stand is a friction cradle, not a lock, so the unit can be lifted out and dropped back without releasing anything. Presentation mode works in the cradle; trigger mode works in the hand.

Does the gooseneck sag over time?

It holds its shape under its own weight plus the reader. It will drift if it is repeatedly bent or if the unit is pulled out at an angle rather than lifted, which is why the cradle is open at the front.

Why does the operating temperature start at −10 °C?

That is the specified limit for this imaging engine. Below it, decoding becomes unreliable before the unit fails outright — so treat −10 °C as the working floor, not the survival floor.

Will it read a code on a phone screen?

Yes. The white illuminator and the 52.1° field of view handle LCD and OLED screens at normal screen brightness.
